How often should high-risk patients use fluoride gels?

High-risk patients are those who have a higher likelihood of developing dental caries (cavities) due to factors such as poor oral hygiene, a diet high in sugars, existing dental issues, or certain medical conditions. For these individuals, daily use of fluoride gels is recommended as it provides a continuous supply of fluoride to help strengthen tooth enamel and combat the demineralization process that leads to cavities.

Fluoride works by enhancing the remineralization of teeth and reducing the ability of harmful bacteria to produce acid, which protects against decay. The increased exposure to fluoride on a daily basis can significantly lower the risk of cavities in patients who are already at a higher risk.

Using fluoride gels only during dental check-ups does not provide the constant protection needed. Similarly, weekly or monthly applications would not offer the same level of protection as daily use, as the cavity-causing processes can occur quickly if teeth are not consistently fortified with fluoride. Therefore, the recommendation for high-risk patients is to use fluoride gels daily to effectively support their oral health.
